SPEECH BY THE CHAIRMAN OF THE REFORMED FORUM OF PHARMACY TECHNICIAN IN NIGERIA(EDO STATE CHAPTER) TO COMMEMORATE WORLD PHARMACY TECHNICIAN DAY

Distinguished colleagues,

It gives me great pleasure today as we commemorate World Pharmacy Technician Day—a day set aside to celebrate the indispensable role of pharmacy technicians in strengthening healthcare delivery systems across the world, and indeed, in Nigeria. This year’s theme, “Professionalism and Quality: Pharmacy Technicians as Frontline Solution to Quackery in Nigerian Pharmacy Practice,” could not have come at a better time.It reminds us of the critical role we play in ensuring that the practice of pharmacy in Nigeria remains safe, ethical, and of the highest professional standard.

In recent years, our nation has continued to battle the menace of quackery—an ugly reality that threatens the very foundation of quality healthcare delivery. Unqualified individuals infiltrate our profession, dispensing medicines without the requisite training or ethical guidance. The results are tragic: misuse of drugs, treatment failures, adverse reactions, and loss of lives. However, amid this growing concern, pharmacy technicians have emerged as the first line of defense. As trained and certified professionals, we serve as the bridge between the pharmacist and the patient, ensuring that every medicine dispensed meets safety standards and that every patient interaction upholds the dignity of the profession.

Professionalism is not just about qualifications—it is about conduct, competence, and commitment to quality care. A professional pharmacy technician embodies accuracy, empathy, confidentiality, and accountability. Every prescription we handle, every counseling we provide, and every drug we dispense reflects the image of the pharmacy profession. As frontline healthcare providers, we must continually improve ourselves through continuing education, mentorship, and adherence to regulatory guidelines. It is through our conduct that the public distinguishes between a professional and a quack.

Quality in pharmacy practice is not negotiable. Our communities trust us because they believe in the quality of our service, and it is our duty to uphold that trust. By maintaining strict compliance with standard operating procedures, accurate record keeping, and good dispensing practices, pharmacy technicians contribute immensely to ensuring that the public receives safe, effective, and affordable healthcare. Pharmacy technicians stand at the frontline of healthcare delivery—in hospitals, community pharmacies, teaching institutions, and regulatory spaces. We are the eyes and ears of the pharmacy profession. We identify errors, ensure rational use of medicines, and uphold the integrity of the supply chain. To effectively combat quackery, we must strengthen our collaboration with pharmacists, regulators, and professional associations, while also educating the public on the dangers of obtaining medicines from unqualified sources.

As we celebrate 2025 world Pharmacy Technician Day today, let this gathering not just be a commemoration but a renewal of our professional commitment. Let every pharmacy technician here today make a personal pledge to uphold the highest ethical standards, resist any form of malpractice, promote continuous learning and development, and serve as advocates against quackery in our communities. Together, we can restore dignity to pharmacy practice and safeguard the health of our people.

I want to sincerely appreciate the efforts of the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN), The reformed forum of pharmacy technicians in Nigeria (RFPTN), and all stakeholders working tirelessly to regulate and professionalize our practice. Your guidance, policies, and advocacy have positioned pharmacy technicians as key players in the healthcare delivery system.

In closing, let us remember that professionalism and quality are not mere slogans—they are the lifeblood of our profession. As pharmacy technicians, we are not just assistants; we are guardians of safe medication use and partners in national health advancement. Let us continue to uphold the values that make us proud professionals, and together, let us say no to quackery and yes to quality pharmacy practice in Nigeria.
