According to a statement jointly issued by the SUG President, Comr. Ozoagu Chinedu G., and the Secretary-General, Comr. Utazi Simon O., the development followed an emergency meeting held on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, between the University Management and the leadership of the Students’ Union. The meeting was convened to address pressing issues bordering on students’ welfare.

During the engagement, the University Management reportedly outlined strategic plans aimed at transforming the institution, noting that inadequate funding remains a major challenge. As a result, Management proposed a 100 percent increase in school fees, to take effect from the 2025/2026 academic session.

Reacting to the proposal, the Students’ Union Government stated that it has critically assessed the situation from the students’ perspective and has since been engaging Management through constructive dialogue to reach a fair and balanced resolution.

The SUG disclosed that, after extensive consultations with students and student leaders across faculties in both the Nsukka campus (UNN) and the Enugu campus (UNEC) within the last 72 hours, a consensus was reached. The Union said it could only consider a 25 percent increment in school fees, if absolutely necessary, given the prevailing economic realities in the country.

Furthermore, the Union revealed that students strongly opposed any increment in hostel fees, especially in light of existing challenges with hostel living conditions. According to the SUG, increasing hostel fees without corresponding improvements in facilities and welfare is unacceptable to the student body.

The SUG reaffirmed its commitment to protecting students’ interests while also supporting the overall development and sustainability of the University. Students were encouraged to remain calm, orderly, and hopeful as discussions with Management continue.

The statement also referenced a Joint Consultative Committee (JCC) meeting held on December 27, 2025, involving student leaders from the Nsukka campus and key university stakeholders.

The Students’ Union concluded with its traditional slogan:

“Aluta Continua, Victoria Ascerta!”

The notice was signed by principal officers of the UNN Students’ Union Government, including the President, Vice President, Secretary-General, and other members of the Executive Council.
